L'Occitane Pivoine Sublime Tinted Lip Balm

L'Occitane Pivoine Sublime Tinted Lip Balm

There is a Mediterranean legend of a beautiful nymph named Paeonia who was so courted by the gods that a jealous goddess transformed her into a flower with a thousand petals: a peony. Since then, this symbol of beauty brightens every spring with its dazzling show of colors and scents. The Peony collection offers a floral and generous perfume and eau de toilette, both marked with green freshness and contains a peony extract from Drôme in the south of France.

I've talked about this collection a couple of times; herehere and here.
L'Occitane has revamped their Peony line and added some new shades. I got the one named Tender red which is a charming red color

This creamy beauty balm nourishes, smoothens, protects (SPF25) and sublimates the lips while giving them a vivid red shade.

Lips feel comfortable, with an 8h-hydration* and look evenly colored.

Enriched with perfecting peony extract, this lip balm is easy to apply and offers a natural finish, for simply beautiful bold lips.

A peony flower coming into bloom is truly stunning. The flower transforms itself, revealing a natural unique beauty with perfectly velvety fresh and luminous petals.

I always loved the design of these lip balms. The packaging is heavy - the outer layer is made from some sort of metal. It feels luxurious.

The double packaging also makes the lip balm feel luxurious and even if I love it, I wish they'd ditch it. I mean, we have enough waste as it is.

In the past I've tried the original formula which I loved. However, I could never justify the price (~17€)

I tried the deep brown shade which on me looked like nude lips just "better". It was brilliant!

I expected all that and more from the renewed shade.

The color is a true red. It applies evenly and non-streaky. The color lasts on me about 2 hours and if I don't eat or drink, even more.
Out of the box, it has a very strong scent. I don't like scented lip balms, and if they need to be scented (because of the masses), the scent should be subtle. Well, with this lip balm the scent is very strong. It smells like peonies. A lovely, fresh scent but so overpowering for something that goes so close to your nose.

What about its moisturizing properties?

Well, I don't know. It doesn't feel like a regular lip balm. It goes on harder (and more pigmented) and it leaves a very thin layer on your lips. Nothing you'd feel. But it doesn't have that extra moisturizing boost that you'd expect a lip balm to have.

That's why I'd use this instead of a lip tint and not as a lip balm. Firstly because it's not very moisturized and it would make your chapped lips look even worse and secondly because you can't apply it blindly (without a mirror) because the tint it very pigmented and the mistakes are easy to see (and a bit harder to fix as it clings to your skin).

+ Lovely design
+ heavy package (feels luxurious)
+ great color payoff
+ leaves a slight stain on your lips
+ has SPF 25
+ you can layer it up!

- heavily scented
- doesn't moisturize enough
- expensive (17€)

Rating:
(because the scent is too strong and because it's not as moisturizing as it promises)

I had high hopes for this lip balm. It delivered some of them as it is very pigmented. But it failed at the main one - the moisturizing factor. But because it works so well as a tinted product I will keep on using it anyway. I will layer another lip balm underneath and I will use a mirror whenever applying it, but I think I'll manage to use it up.

What do you think of it? Would you try it? Let me know in the comments below.
